ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the impact of Covid-19 vaccines on sperm quality. Study Design: Case control study Place and Duration of Study: Department of Diabetes & Endocrinology, Chandka Medical College Hospital Larkana from 1st July 2022 to 31st December 2022. Methodology: Patients were enrolled as 50 those who had PCR confirmed Covid 19 history and 50 those who never got Covid-19. On this basis those cases who had a Covid-19 history were placed in group A while those who did not had Covid-19 history were placed in Group B. Patients clinical history including anamnesis, marital status, cryptorchidism, operative varicocele, or any chronic ailment were documented. A counting chamber was used for sperm count in a 100 square area. Spermatozoa was measured as either rapid-progressively motile (Type a), or as slow-progressively-motile (Type b), or as situ motile (Type c), and finally as immobile (Type d). The total semen sperm count was gained by multiplication of concentration of sperm with its volume. Result(s): Volume and concentration was significantly different in both study groups. Difference in tail anomaly was also observed. In group A, it was 29.20 +/- 10.26 while 27.59 +/- 12.31 was the value of group B. Almost equal number of participants were married. Azoospermia was only found among Covid patients. Conclusion(s): Azoospermia was only found in Covid patients and no such results were obtained from Covid negative patients.Copyright © 2023 Lahore Medical And Dental College. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has placed a global challenge on both healthcare and society. So far, studies have shown that men are more prone to become ill than women and are more likely to die compared to female patients. Higher rates of positive cases and fatality in men than women have drawn the attention of scientists to investigate the possible impacts of SARS-CoV-2 on the male reproductive system. In this review, we tried to summarise so far findings on the effect of the SARS-CoV-2 on the male reproductive function to further assess the potential risks of this novel coronavirus on male reproductive health.

ABSTRACT

People are becoming parents later in life and with increased parental age adverse reproductive outcomes are increased. Cryopreservation of gametes enables men and women to protect, prolong and seemingly preserve their fertility. Social freezing is an increasingly popular way of cryopreservation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the gamete bank Cryos International experienced an increased influx of men wanting to deposit their sperm. A questionnaire-based study was initiated to investigate their motivations for doing so. The results showed that the men chose to deposit mainly due to medical indications (e.g. cancer and sex change), and that the COVID-19 pandemic had no significant influence on the reason for banking their sperm. Investigations into the altruistic reasons for depositing sperm (i.e. caring for reproductive masculinity) could shed new light onto the sparsely studied topic of male reproductive journeys.

ABSTRACT

Background and objectives: Since the outbreak of COVID-19, more and more studies have proved that it has an impact on the male reproductive system. The purpose of this article is to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on male semen parameters, further analyze the incidence and risk factors of diseases related to semen parameters, and put forward to corresponding preventive measures. Methods: Retrieved from PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Clinicaltrails, CNKI, CBM, Wanfang Database and VIP to collect research on the effects of COVID-19 on the male reproductive system. The literature search was conducted until January 2022. In strict accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria, two researchers independently screened the literature and comprehensively analyzed five cohort studies on the impact of COVID-19 on male reproductive system. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of the included cohort studies, and Revman 5.4.1 was applied for statistical analysis. Results: Semen volume (RR = -0.10; 95% CI: 0.45, 0.26; P = 0.60), there was no significant difference between the test group and the control group; Sperm count (RR = -45.28; 95% CI: 66.38, 24.19; P = 0.0001), the sperm count of the COVID-19 test group was lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant; Sperm concentration (RR = -15.65 × 106; 95%CI: 31.52 × 106, 0.21 × 106; P = 0.05), there was no significant difference between the test group and the control group; progressive sperm motility (RR = 4.31; 95% CI: 4.62, 13.24; P = 0.34), there was no effect on progressive sperm motility in the COVID-19 test group compared with the control group. Conclusions: COVID-19 can reduce semen quality and affect male fertility. However, due to the limitations of this study, this conclusion needs to be further verified by large-sample, high-quality prospective cohort studies on the long-term effects of COVID-19 on male reproductive function.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Short- and long-term implications of SARS-CoV-2 on the quality of the sperm and the results of this on fertility remain largely unknown due to lack of longitudinal studies. In this longitudinal observational cohort study, we aimed to analyse the differential effect and the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on different semen quality parameters. METHODS: Sperm quality was assessed using the World Health Organization criteria, DNA damage to sperm cells by quantifying the DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and the high-density stainability (HDS), IgA- and IgG-anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) were assessed with light microscopy. FINDINGS: SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with sperm parameters that were independent of spermatogenic cycle like progressive motility, morphology, DFI and HDS, as well as spermatogenic cycle dependent parameters such as sperm concentration. Detection of IgA- and IgG-ASA allowed classification of patients in three different groups according to its sequence of appearance in sperm during post-COVID-19 follow-up. The maximum progressive motility was lowest during follow-up in patients without ASA (41.9%), intermediate in patients with only IgA-ASA (46.2%) and highest inpatients who had both IgA- and IgG-ASA (54.9%). INTERPRETATION: SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with changes of all analysed sperm parameters to a different degree which is also observed in their return to normality and is suggestive of individual variations in the patient's immune system performance. Firstly, sperm production is decreased through temporal immune mediated arrest of active meiosis, and secondly immune induced sperm DNA damage prevents fertilization if transferred to the oocyte. Both mechanisms are temporal, and most sperm parameters return to baseline after infection. FUNDING: AML (R20-014), Femicare.

ABSTRACT

The recent COVID-19 pandemic led to many drastic changes in not only society, law, economics, but also in science and medicine, marking for the first time when drug regulatory authorities cleared for use mRNA-based vaccines in the fight against this outbreak. However, while indeed representing a novel application of such technology in the context of vaccination medicine, introducing RNA into cells to produce resultant molecules (proteins, antibodies, etc.) is not a novel principle. It has been common practice to introduce/inject mRNA into oocytes and embryos to inhibit, induce, and identify several factors in a research context, while such aspects have also been proposed as potential therapeutic and diagnostic applications to combat infertility in humans. Herein, we describe key areas where mRNA-based platforms have thus far represented potential areas of clinical applications, describing the advantages and limitations of such applications. Finally, we also discuss how recent advances in mRNA-based platforms, driven by the recent pandemic, may stand to benefit the treatment of infertility in humans. We also present brief future directions as to how we could utilise recent and current advancements to enhance RNA therapeutics within reproductive biology, specifically with relation to oocyte and embryo delivery.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mRNA vaccine affects sperm morphokinetics using a computer-assisted semen analyzer and other semen parameters using a sperm chromatin structure assay. Method(s): Healthy male volunteers in two Japanese clinics between May 2021 and December 2021 were prospectively analyzed. Participants donated sperm twice, two days apart, in the following phases: before vaccination, 2 weeks after the first vaccine dose, and 2, 4, and 12 weeks after the second dose. Basic sperm parameters, sperm motility characteristics, and the percentage of DNA-damaged sperm were compared among the different phases. Result(s): Ninety-six semen samples from ten volunteers, who were vaccinated with the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine, were evaluated. There were no significant differences between any phases in basic semen findings and parameters of the sperm chromatin structure assays. Regarding sperm motion characteristics, the average linear velocity, beat-cross frequency, and sperm motility index significantly decreased after the second vaccine dose (P=0.018, P=0.003, and P=0.027, respectively), with no significant differences between any two phases by post-hoc pairwise comparisons. Conclusion(s): After COVID-19 mRNA vaccination, while sperm motion characteristics might fluctuate, no apparent deterioration of basic sperm parameters or sperm DNA integrity was observed. Given the adverse effects of COVID-19 on sperm, our findings suggest that there might be no reason to refrain from vaccination for healthy individuals.Copyright © 2023 Asian Pacific Journal of Reproduction Produced by Wolters Kluwer- Medknow.

ABSTRACT

Androgen insensitivity syndrome has a wide spectrum of presentations. It results from a mutation in androgen receptor (AR) gene. It ranges from mild androgen insensitivity syndrome (MAIS) which is the mildest form to complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS). In case of MAIS, the abnormality that can be observed appears to be male infertility and sexual difficulties including premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. In this case report, we discuss a case of MAIS in a 37-year-old male who presented with infertility, premature ejaculation, and secondary erectile dysfunction.Copyright © 2023, Ibn Sina Trust. ABSTRACT

Background: Increasing availability of highly effective cystic fibrosis (CF) transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulator therapy (HEMT) has improved the quality of life and long-term prognosis for many people with CF. Thus, more people with CF are considering parenthood. Almost all menwith CF (MwCF) are infertile because of congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). Based on CF animal models, CBAVD occurs early in gestation and is unlikely to be reversible using HEMT, but assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) can enable MwCF to father children using the sperm in their testes. Animal reproductive models suggest no HEMT teratogenicity, and the amount of exposure of the fetus to HEMT via absorption of seminal fluid through the vaginal wall is predicted to be negligible, although to ensure no sperm exposure to HEMT, the life span of sperm would require MwCF to discontinue CFTR modulators for approximately 3 months before ART. Because abrupt discontinuation of CFTR modulators may result in health decline, MwCF and their providers must consider all potential risks. There are no published data in MwCF regarding use of HEMT during conception and partner pregnancy. Method(s): Beginning in August 2021, CF center staff in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia completed a two-page anonymous questionnaire regarding MwCF who used CFTR modulators during ART (sperm retrieval and in vitro fertilization) or natural conception with subsequent partner pregnancy. Result(s): Providers have submitted 34 surveys for MwCF on CFTR modulators whose partner became pregnant after use of ART (n = 32) or natural conception (n = 2). The median age of the samplewas 32 (range 24- 43). Fifteen were homozygous for F508del, median percentage predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second was 76% (range (22-111%), and median body mass index was 24 kg/m2 (range 18.5-32.1). Twenty-three were taking elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor. The median time that MwCF were taking CFTR modulators before partner conception was 18 months (range 0-82). One newly diagnosed man initiated HEMT after sperm retrieval. Four MwCF stopped CFTR modulators before sperm retrieval, one of whom experienced pulmonary decline. None of the 19 MwCF whose condom use during pregnancy was known used condoms. Fetal complications in partners of MwCF included three first-trimester miscarriages, two* COVID, two breech presentation, two* vaginal bleeding, and one vasa previa. None of the complications were deemed definitively related to use of CFTR modulators. One MwCF experienced testicular infection after sperm retrieval#. Postpartum complications included three# infants with hypoxemia requiring neonatal intensive care unit stay, three maternal blood loss, one forceps delivery, and one caesarean section. No congenital anomalies were reported for any infant. (*/# overlap). Conclusion(s): Use of CFTR modulator therapy during partner conception and pregnancy in 34 MwCF has not resulted in higher-than-expected miscarriage rates or congenital anomalies. Providers should consider the risk to the health of MwCF combined with the lack of teratogenicity in animal reproductive models and limited safety data in the human fetus before discontinuing CFTR modulators before ART or natural partner conception. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The effect of the SARSCoV- 2 infection and vaccine on male fertility has been a cause of controversy. Studies have found that while COVID-19 disease can be associated with decreased sperm counts and quality, the vaccine is not. Despite evidence about the lack of association between the COVID-19 vaccine and male fertility, social media platforms, including TikTok, continue to spread misleading information. Objective(s): To identify how TikTok contributes to misinformation regarding the COVID-19 virus, vaccination, and male infertility. METHOD(S): After excluding unrelated videos, 58 videos using the terms #covidvaccine and #malefertility were identified on Tiktok from January 1 to December 31, 2021. Videos were reviewed by five independent researchers. Information collected included video publication date, length, views, likes, comments, presence of US certified medical professional, demographic details, scientific article cited, belief held on COVID-19 vaccine, infection and infertility, modified DISCERN score and Patient Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT). The PEMAT score evaluated 17 items regarding understandability and actionability. The modified DISCERN based reliability score ranked quality from 1=poor, to 5=excellent. Data was analyzed using SPSS statistics software v24. RESULT(S): The average video was 51 seconds long, received 34,678 views, 3,301 likes, and 160 comments. A majority of videos featured a medical professional (67.2%). Most videos were of the opinion that the COVID-19 infection causes infertility in men (48.3%) but not the vaccine (37.9%). Few videos believed that the vaccine was responsible for male infertility (6.9%). The average DISCERN score for the 58 videos was 2.93, PEMAT Understandability score was 76.1%, and PEMAT Actionability score was 25.7%. With the presence of a certified US Medical Professional in the TikTok video, the average DISCERN score (2.00 vs. 3.38, p=.001), PEMAT Understandability Score (67.68 vs. 80.26, p=.015), and PEMAT Actionability Score (13.16 vs. 31.82, p=.024) increased significantly. Videos with medical professionals present had a lower average number of views (31,996 vs. 40179, p=.691), fewer likes (1,902 vs. 6,173, p=.290), and fewer comments (150 vs. 182, p=.737), but none of these differences were statistically significant. CONCLUSION(S): This study demonstrates that TikTok videos endorsing misinformation are popularly viewed. Among all the misinformation in social media, it is reassuring to see that there are medical professionals interested in promoting medically accurate information.

ABSTRACT

Background: It is well knowledge that various viral illnesses may interfere with a man's ability to father children. Through the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 receptor, which is highly concentrated in testicular tissue, the corona virus illness known as COVID-19 may cause harm to several organs. On the other hand, there is a paucity of data about the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in sperm, as well as the virus's influence on spermatogenesis and the capacity for fertility. We intended to look into whether or not COVID-19 guys' sperm contained SARS-CoV-2 as well as examine how COVID-19 affected the overall quality of the sperm and the degree to which it's DNA was fragmented. Material(s) and Method(s): The survey was conducted between May 2022 to October 2022, with the participation of 40 male COVID-19 patients who were between the ages of 19 and 45 and enrolled at the RSDKS, Government Medical College, Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh. We tested each sample of sperm with a real-time reverse transcriptase and found no abnormalities. At the time of the initial sample, which took place during COVID-19, a comprehensive examination of the sperm was carried out. This analysis included the calculation of the sperm DNA Fragmentation Index. After 74 days had passed since the first sample, we were able to get the second specimen and carried out the aforementioned tests once again. Result(s): All of the sperm samples that were examined using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) came back negative for SARS-CoV-2. These samples were taken during the first and second sampling. The initial sample had considerably lower levels of fructose, semen volume, vitality, total motility, sperm concentration, total sperm count, percentage of normal morphology, and cytoplasmic droplet percentage than the subsequent samples. On the other hand, the agglutination of the semen, the percentage of head defects, the DNA Fragmentation Index, the liquefaction time, the viscosity of the semen, and the number of leukocytes all rose. At the second sample, these results were inverted, but not to the level that would be considered optimal. These results all had a p-value less than 0.05, meaning they were statistically significant. As a result, COVID-19 has a detrimental impact on the characteristics of the sperm, including the sperm DNA fragmentation index. Conclusion(s): The quality of the semen remained low up until the second time it was sampled, despite the fact that we were unable to discover SARS-CoV-2 in the sample. It is recommended that assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics and sperm banking facilities evaluate the quality of the sperm produced by males infected with COVID-19 and exclude men who have a history of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 until the men's sperm quality recovers to normal.Copyright © 2023 Ubiquity Press. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Infertility is a global health concern that affects couples worldwide. Economic, racial, and geographic disparities in reproductive medicine have long affected access to fertility care. These inequalities further worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic as fertility care services were systematically paused and treatments were delayed. At-home fertility tests emerged as a seemingly convenient, affordable and accessible option for all men seeking initial semen analysis testing and screening. We aim to study the racial and socioeconomic characteristics of a cohort of men utilizing at-home sperm testing kits in the United States over 3 years. METHOD(S): We retrospectively reviewed the records of 5,822 men who requested semen analysis at Give Legacy, Inc. (Legacy) facilities from 2019 to 2021. The demographic characteristics of these men were collected including their age, race/ethnicity, and place of residence. Further, the weighted median household income of Legacy customers was calculated using their personal ZIP codes and corresponding median income data from the U.S. census bureau. RESULT(S): The mean age (SD) of this cohort was 34.9+/-7.3 years. Among these 5,822 men, there were 3,936 (67.6%) normozoospermic men and 1,886 (32.3%) oligozoospermic men. The group consisted of predominantly white men (64.9%) with only 5.2% Black, 5.4% Latino, 8.9% Asian, 3.1% Arab, 2% Native Hawaiian, 2.4% Indian American, and 8.2% other groups. The geographic distribution of participants showed a majority of men from the Northeast (31.6%) and Pacific (23.4%) regions. The median household income of a Legacy customer is $108,858;significantly higher than the U.S. median household income of $70,784 (P<.01). CONCLUSION(S): Despite the fact that at-home, mail-in kits provide a better and more affordable access to initial fertility care, ethnic minorities and lower socioeconomic classes are still underrepresented in the population of men seeking fertility testing in this cohort. Further research is needed to understand the racial and socioeconomic drivers of the existing disparities in fertility care.

ABSTRACT

Background: Infertility is estimated to occur in 1 out of every 4-7 couples. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a type of assisted reproduction introduced in 1992, has been used across the world for almost all indications of infertility, yielding high pregnancy rates. There is a growing concern worldwide about ICSI since semen quality has declined in recent years, accompanied with the potential risks of this technology. This study aims to analyze the current status and hotspots of ICSI via a bibliometric analysis. Methods: We retrieved publications on ICSI from the Web of Science Core Collection database from 2002 to 2021. CiteSpace was used to summarize knowledge mapping of subject categories, keywords, and co-citation relationships with the strongest citation bursts. VOSviewer was used to explore co-citation and co-occurrence relationships for countries, organizations, references, authors, and keywords. Results: A total of 8271 publications were analyzed between 2002 and 2021. The major findings are as follows: the USA, China, Italy, Japan, and Belgium are the top five prolific countries. The Free University of Brussels, University of Copenhagen, University of Valencia, Ghent University, and the University of California San Francisco are the top five contributing organizations. Fertility and Sterility and Human Reproduction are the most productive and cited journals. The hotspot topics are risks of ICSI, oocyte preservation, live birth rate, infertile men, and embryo quality in the past two decades. Conclusion: This study presents a research overview of ICSI from different perspectives. These findings will contribute to a better understanding of the current status of ICSI research and provide hotspots and trends for future studies.

ABSTRACT

The article presents an overview of the most significant publications on the topic of male infertility. The main selection criteria were the practical significance of the article, as well as the impact factor of the journal in which it was published, according to the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR). As a result, a list of 10 papers published in the first quarter (January - March) of 2022 was compiled. The review includes articles on the following issues: the role of coronavirus infection in male infertility, the effectiveness of aromatase inhibitors in infertile men, the effect of assisted reproductive technologies on the reproductive health of descendants, recurrent miscarriage, the effect of antibiotic therapy on the DNA fragmentation index, the role of antisperm antibodies in male infertility, the incidence of idiopathic male infertility, the Sixth Edition WHO guidelines for the ejaculate processing, as well as the relationship of depression with male infertility.Copyright © 2022 Izdatel'stvo Meditsina. ABSTRACT

Christian leaders and organizations sided overwhelmingly with politicians, scientists, social elites, and various progressive groups to champion the application of "scientific" methods designed to improve the nation's gene pool. Large numbers of Christians believed that genetic improvement of the human species was in keeping with God's command that humankind exercise dominion over creation.2 The unholy association of American Christianity with eugenics laboratories and associations was undermined by 1940 through rec-ognition of Nazi atrocities and realization of the extent to which eugenicists would go in attempts to accelerate and enhance what they saw as "natural" evolutionary processes. The generally favorable disposition of American Christians to the market's moral outcomes, even those that seem to test their reli-gious values, creates a climate in which churches increasingly will be challenged to protect the divine source of human dignity-what German theologian Helmut Thielicke called "alien dignity"-from functional and manipulable views of the person that arise alongside markets for genetic services.3 The entrepreneurial nature of the new "consumer" eugenics also highlights a divide that has formed between American churches and their memberships. Newborn screening and various forms of "reproductive genetics," oncology practices, treatments for auto-immune diseases, and even the response to the COVID-19 pandemic have been boons to this industry, not to mention growth in general interest among Americans eager to learn more about their genealogical and family histories.5 There is even a mail order industry for amateur geneticists who wish to experiment with gene editing in the privacy of their homes.6 It is consumer demand by individuals whose motivations range from the simple desire to experiment with cutting-edge technologies to those who envision possibilities for human "enhancement" to patients who face debil-itating genetic diseases, which fuels fear of a new eugenic age.

ABSTRACT

Several preventive measures, including vaccination, have been implemented owing to the severe global effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but there is still limited evidence in the effect of this disease and vaccination against it on male fertility. Therefore, this study is to compare sperm parameters of infertile patients with or without COVID-19 infection and the effect of COVID-19 vaccine types on them. Semen samples of infertile patients were collected consecutively at Universitas Indonesia - Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (Jakarta, Indonesia). COVID-19 was diagnosed by rapid antigen or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Vaccination was performed with three types of vaccine, namely inactivated viral vaccine, messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine, and viral vector vaccine. Spermatozoa were then analyzed on the World Health Organization recommendations, and DNA fragmentation was assayed with the sperm chromatin dispersion kit. The results showed that the COVID-19 group experienced a significant decrease in sperm concentration and progressive motility (both P < 0.05), but there was no significant change in morphology or sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI; both P > 0.05). The viral vector vaccine caused a decrease in morphology as well as an increase in DFI compared with the control (both P < 0.05), meanwhile results for those who were vaccinated with the inactivated and mRNA types were not significant compared with the control (both P > 0.05). We conclude that COVID-19 has negative effects on sperm parametes and sperm DNA fragmentation, and we found that the viral vector vaccines affect sperm parameter values and DNA fragmentation negatively. Further studies with a larger population and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the results.

ABSTRACT

Background: Although the negative impact on fertility of men recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been suggested, there is insufficient evidence, and the data are limited and contradictory. The present prospective study aimed to evaluate the sex-related hormones, semen parameters, erectile dysfunction (ED), and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in a cohort of men who recovered from COVID-19 and age-matched control men. Methods: Semen samples were collected from twenty-two men recovered from COVID-19 with a median time of 91.5 days and thirty-six control males. The semen parameters were evaluated according to the World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory manual to examine and process human semen. The blood samples were collected to assess the male hormone profile. ED and LUTS were evaluated with the International Index of Erectile Function 5 (IIEF-5) and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), respectively. Results: The follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (3.819±1.515 IU/L), luteinizing hormone (LH) (4.023±1.792 IU/L), prolactin (PRL) [12.60 (10.72-15.20) ng/mL], and testosterone (T) [4.345 (3.565-5.525) ng/mL] levels were at normal range in all males enrolled in the study. Levels of semen volume (control: 2.5 mL vs. COVID-19: 1.9 mL; P<0.05) and sperm concentration (control: 59×106/mL vs. COVID-19: 41.5×106/mL; P<0.005) were significantly lower in males recovered from COVID-19, but still technically well within normal regardless of WHO edition. All variables were examined through logistic regression analysis, demonstrating that only sperm concentration was an independent variable associated with men recovered from COVID-19 [odds ratio (OR) =1; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.999-1.098; P=0.016]. According to correlation analysis, there was no correlation between sperm concentration and other semen parameters and sex-related hormone profiles. Furthermore, an absence of ED and LUTS in men who recovered from COVID-19 was evidenced using the IIEF-5 and IPSS, respectively. Conclusions: Reproductive-age males recovered from COVID-19 have normal sperm concentration. Sperm concentration did not correlate with other semen parameters, sex-related hormones, IIEF-5, and IPSS. Further studies should be performed to evaluate whether the lower sperm concentration and semen volume that were still within the normal range are a transient or prolonged downregulation resulting from the COVID-19 attack.

Background: As there is an increase of infections in the male population, concerns have emerged about the potential impact of COVID-19 on male fertility. This study aimed to investigate systematically the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the semen and determine the contagiousness of sperm and its influence on male fertility after COVID-19 infection. Method(s): Electronic searches were performed in PubMed/ MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science up to December 2021 regarding the existence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in seminal fluid, testis, and the effects of COVID-19 on male reproduction. A total of 24 original articles were included in the study. Result(s): The presence of a virus in a semen sample is still a topic of discussion and research due to the small number of studies. Only two studies identified viral mRNA in the semen of infected men;others stated semen is not infectious with SARS-CoV-2 at one week or more after COVID-19 infection. However, couples with a desire for pregnancy should be warned that sperm quality after COVID-19 infection can be suboptimal. According to the existing clinical data, this virus could infect the testis and the male genital tract and cause damage to male fertility. It shows a negative impact on male reproductive health, inducing spermatogenic failure. However, the mechanism for testicular involvement remains doubtful. Conclusion(s): SARS-CoV-2 RNA was undetectable in all semen samples, but it may cause testicular involvement and impact the male reproductive system inducing spermatogenic failure.
